Hike to Lake Chalice, Mount Richmond Forest Park

Hike to Lake Chalice, Mount Richmond Forest Park

The perfect easy overnighter for the kiddos these school holidays! Or if you fancy a tougher trip, extend your loop to Old Man Hut and over Mt Rintoul. Lake Chalice is the only lake in Mount Richmond Forest Park; you’ll find it nestled in an idyllic valley amongst native beech forest. Bring as many snacks and games as you can carry and cosy up around the woodburner!

Getting there 🚗 (Google maps is a little tricky for this one!)
Turn off the State Highway onto Northbank Road. Follow for 33km, then turn right onto Top Valley Road. Continue for 6km, turn left onto Staircase Road then follow for another 18km to the carpark at road end.

Kid Friendly Out-and-Back:
Distance: 5km round trip
Elevation: +420, -410m

Kid Friendly Circuit:
Distance: 10.8km loop
Elevation: +525, -520

Type 2 Fun:
Day 1: Lake Chalice to Old Man Hut | 15.5km, +1000m -1000m
Day 2: Old Man to Mid Goulter Hut via Mt Rintoul | 19.7km, +1300m -2000m
Day 3: Mid Goulter Hut to Lake Chalice | 12km, +1000 -300m

This route is for the experienced backcountry tramper! It’s “on track” the entire way, but requires navigating the notorious Richmond Ranges tops. The alpine route is beyond stunning, but can be very exposed in places. They’re big days, so start early, take your head torch and pick a good weather window!
