Hike to Rocks Hut, Mount Richmond Forest Park

Hike to Rocks Hut, Mount Richmond Forest Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

The humble local favourite - Rocks Hut is super accessible from Nelson. This would be an excellent choice for a long training run, an overnighter with some extra luxuries (🍫🍷), or even a challenging one for the kids!

There is an extensive network of trails in this area, and we’d be here all day if we went through all of the route options! So here are a couple of the best. If you’ve got a lovely human who will do drop off and pick up, you could always turn this trip into a point-to-point!

From Maitai Dam - Casual
Distance: 25km round trip
Elevation: +1142m -1477m
Heading up Dew Lakes and Little Twin, then out via Windtrap Gully on the Coppermine Trail. Keep in mind that mountain bikers will be using the Coppermine!

From Brook Street - Grunty
Distance: 32km round trip
Elevation: +2369 -2359
Heading up the Dun Mountain Trail from Brook Street, then over Fringed Hill, Wooded Peak and the Coppermine Saddle. Option to head out via Third House Shelter on the Dun Mountain Trail.

Now is a great time to visit this hut as it is a popular stop on the Te Araroa trail - best to get in during the off season! And don’t forget to grab yourself a well-earned choccy milk from the Brook Street Dairy on your way home 😋
