Packing for a winter day hike

Packing for a winter day hike

The snow is here! Which means there's no better time to get out and enjoy our wild places - nothing compares to a sunny, snow-covered alpine vista 😍

Here's our go-to list to make sure all bases are covered before heading out on a winter day mish! Keep in mind that temperatures are lower, weather can be more volatile & days are shorter. Whether it's a local trail or an ambitious adventure - be prepared!

🩵 Pack size: slightly bigger than usual to fit your extra gear
🩵 Layers: short-sleeved for when the sun is shining, heavy fleece/puffy for when the wind chill sets in
🩵 Rainwear: light or heavy shell depending on the forecast
🩵 Sun Protection: just because it's winter doesn't mean the kiwi sun loses it's intensity!
🩵Microspikes: small & lightweight, for those icy sections (we love the Black Diamond Access Spikes)
🩵 Headtorch: shorter days = dusk sets in quick in the mountains
🩵 Sit Pad: stay insulated from the ground and always have somewhere comfy to rest
🩵 Snow Gear: if you've got a big mish on the cards!
🩵 Toilet Kit: no brainer!
🩵 Food/Water: don't neglect your hydration just because it's cold!
🩵 Stove: totally optional, but doubles as safety equipment in case of hypothermia
