At MD Outdoors, we offer lightweight, quality hiking and camping gear hire packages for solo adventurers, couples and friends. Whether you're new to tramping, travelling without your own equipment, or simply want to try some great gear before investing, our packages include the essentials you need to get outdoors.

Our gear includes trusted premium, lightweight outdoor brands such as NEMO, Rab, Osprey, Deuter, MSR, Jetboil, Mont and Sea to Summit, chosen for their comfort, reliability and practical performance on the trail so you can enjoy our great walks with peace of mind and a great experience!

Rental Packages

Duo Hiking Package – $175 per day

Perfect for couples, friends or hiking buddies looking to share a tent and cooking equipment while keeping their individual gear comfortable and lightweight.

Your hire includes:

• 1 x Lightweight 2-person tent – Mont Moondance 2P or NEMO Dagger (2kg weight).
• 2 x Sleeping bags suitable to the temperatures - NEMO Forte or Rab Neutrino Pro.
• 2 x insulated warm sleeping mats – NEMO Trail Mummy.
• 2 x Lightweight hiking packs – Osprey Rook 65, Rab Muon, Osprey Eja 48 or Deuter Aircontact Core 45+10 or other suitable adjustable hiking packs.
• 1 x Cooking stove – MSR PocketRocket or Jetboil.
• 2 x Lightweight cups, sporks, camping plates.
• 2 x Sleeping bag liners and pillows.
• 1 x Lightweight headtorch.

Gear models may vary depending on availability. We'll help select a suitable pack and sleeping system for your adventure.

Requirements

• Must be 18 years or older to rent.
• A signed rental agreement is required.
• All gear must be returned clean, dry and in good condition.
• Late returns may incur additional hire charges.
• Lost or damaged equipment may incur repair or replacement costs.
• Equipment is subject to availability, so we recommend booking in advance.
• Hirers are responsible for ensuring they have the skills and experience to use the equipment safely.

How it Works

1. Reserve Online: Choose your 1-person or 2-person package, select your rental dates and complete your booking.
2. Collect Your Gear: Pick up from MD Outdoors in Nelson or Wakefield during our opening hours. We'll help you check the fit and familiarise yourself with the equipment.
3. Enjoy Your Adventure: Head outdoors with quality gear ready for your adventure!
4. Return Your Gear: Drop everything back at your selected MD Outdoors store at the end of your hire period, during opening hours.

Charges

Our gear hire is charged per night, based on the number of nights you have the equipment.

• Pick-up: Collect your gear on your selected pick-up date.
• Return: Return your gear before the shop closes on your selected return date.
• Hire charges: You pay for each night you have the gear.
• Minimum hire: One night.
• Late charges: Will apply if you bring it back late without extending your booking. 

For example: Collect your gear on Friday and return it on Sunday within our open hours  = 2 nights of hire.

Pick-up and drop-off are available at both our Nelson and Wakefield stores.

Booking in advance online is essential to secure your gear, particularly during the busy summer hiking season. Walk-in hire may be available, but we cannot guarantee stock at both locations.
