Hike Into Coldwater Hut - Nelson Lakes

Hike Into Coldwater Hut - Nelson Lakes

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

Location of the Week - Coldwater hut, Nelson Lakes
The perfect spot to hole up in winter that’s family friendly, cosy and peaceful.
Coldwater Hut sits right on the edge of Lake Rotoiti in Nelson Lakes National Park, and it’s one of those spots that feels properly away from it all. Coldwater is a standard 12-bunk hut with a fire, with the jetty right outside. It’s not bookable so use hut tickets for this one.
We love winter - Fewer people, beautifully crisp conditions and, as an added bonus, far fewer sandflies than you’ll encounter around the lake in summer.
The Route
The most straightforward route is from the Mount Robert Road end. Park up before the main Mt Robert car park just where you see the trail head. Follow the Lakeside Track around the western shore of Lake Rotoiti to Coldwater Hut.

Another great option is a paddle from Kerr Bay down to the hut instead and have a different kind of overnight adventure.

Distance: 8km each way (230 elevation) or 8 km paddle in. Or you could loop round past Lakehead hut for a longer walk out.

Time: Allow 2-3 hours one way as the route can be rocky and overgrown.

Check the latest DOC track conditions and weather forecast before you leave. It’s a great one in winter because it’s sheltered in the trees and low elevation.

If you’re paddling in, remember the lake is cold even when the weather looks perfect. Wear the appropriate safety gear, check the forecast and wind. The northerly winds can blow down this lake in the afternoon so paddle early for the best window.

You can also get the water taxi down to here too if you fancy taking it easy.

Happy hiking.
