Looking to gain some altitude without tackling a technical trail? Mount Campbell (Pukeone) is a great option. Standing at 1,330 metres, this peak sits west of Motueka at the northern end of the Arthur Range and is easily recognised by the huge transmission tower on its summit.
What you need to know:
- Drive: Around one hour from Nelson
- Distance: Approximately 9.2km return from the locked gate
- Elevation gain: Around 550m from the gate
- Time: Allow 3–4 hours return
- The reward: Panoramic views across Tasman Bay towards Nelson and deep into Kahurangi National Park.
The terrain:
If you have a 4WD, you can drive to the locked gate at approximately 780 metres, leaving a steady 550-metre climb to the summit. The route follows a 4WD road the entire way, making it straightforward underfoot and a good option for families or mountain biking.
For a bigger challenge—or if you don’t have a suitable vehicle—you can begin from the base of the mountain and take on approximately 1,300 metres of elevation gain on the 4WD track.
