Mt Sunday & Mt Riley Loop, Mount Richmond Forest Park

Mt Sunday & Mt Riley Loop, Mount Richmond Forest Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

We love a good loop track and this challenging circuit climbs steep bush ridges over Mt Riley (1,311m) and Mt Sunday (1,301m). Once you reach the small open tops, you're rewarded with wonderful views over the Kaituna Valley and Wairau Plains. Make it a big day out, or enjoy an overnighter at Mt Sunday Bivvy. This basic two-bunk hut sits just below Mt Sunday's summit on the track towards Mt Riley. It's first come, first served, with no hut ticket required

Distance: 13km loop
Elevation gain: 1,400m
Time: 8-10 hours for the full loop

Getting there
2 hours from Nelson, approach from the Blenheim side from Northbank Road. Follow this for 5 km then turn into Onamalutu Road. After 7 km turn into Briggs Road. Turn into Davies Road and follow this to the car park. A 4WD is recommended. Forestry operations can change road access, so check DOC's Mount Richmond Forest Park access updates before you go.
