10 Kid-Friendly Day Hikes in Nelson Tasman for Families

Looking for a family-friendly day hike in Nelson Tasman? Whether you’re planning a beach adventure, a picnic beside a mountain lake or a climb to a lookout, there are plenty of beautiful places to explore with the kids.

We’ve rounded up ten of our favourite day hikes for a family adventure, from coastal walks to forest trails and mountain viewpoints. Some are gentle outings, while others are better suited to adventurous kids who are happy to walk further or up more!

Where we have a Location of the Week article, we’ve linked it below so you can find out more.

Distances and elevation gains are approximate and may vary depending on your chosen route. Distances are for out and back/loop round trip totals. Allow extra time for little legs, snack stops and exploring along the way.

1. Flora Circuit, Kahurangi National Park

  • Distance: 9-10 km
  • Elevation gain: 480-550m

A lovely family adventure through the beech forests of Kahurangi National Park. The loop takes in Flora Hut and Mt Arthur Hut, giving the kids two great spots to stop for a snack and explore. From just above Mt Arthur Hut, you can also enjoy a taste of the mountain scenery that makes this area so special.

2. Coquille Bay, Abel Tasman National Park

  • Distance: 6.5 km
  • Elevation gain: 190 m

Golden sand, blue water and coastal forest make Coquille Bay a lovely destination for a family day out. Starting from Mārahau, follow the Abel Tasman Coast Track towards the bay, where there’s time to explore the beach, enjoy a picnic and cool off on a warm day.

3. Cable Bay Lookout, Nelson

  • Distance: 2.5 km
  • Elevation gain: 250 m

A short walk with a rewarding view! Climb above Cable Bay for sweeping views across the coastline and out towards the bay. There’s a hill to get the legs working, but it's short, and the lookout makes a great spot for a snack before heading back down the same way.

4. Chaffey Hut, Kahurangi National Park

  • Distance: 11 km
  • Elevation gain: 115 m

Head into the Cobb Valley for a day of forest, river scenery and a visit to a historic backcountry hut. With relatively gentle elevation gain, this is a good option for families who are comfortable with a longer day on their feet but in a flat track. There is a great swim spot here at the stunning hut too.

5. Mt Robert Loop, Nelson Lakes National Park

  • Distance: 9 km
  • Elevation gain: 650 m

For families ready for a bigger adventure, the Mt Robert Loop offers fantastic views over Lake Rotoiti and the surrounding mountains. The climb is steep in places, but the changing scenery and a stop at Bushline Hut make it a rewarding day out.

Keep in mind: This track reaches exposed alpine terrain. Choose a settled weather day and be prepared for cold, wind and snow in colder months.

6. Lake Matiri, Kahurangi National Park

  • Distance: 8 km
  • Elevation gain: 230 m

A scenic family hike near Murchison, Lake Matiri is a great destination for lunch beside the water. The out and back track starts on a wide 4WD track before narrowing as it travels towards the lake and Lake Matiri Hut. If the family loves it, you could always come back and turn it into an overnight trip!

7. Whiskey Falls, Nelson Lakes National Park

  • Distance: 12 km
  • Elevation gain: 300 m

Follow the shores of Lake Rotoiti through native beech forest to reach Whiskey Falls. With lake views along the way and a waterfall as the destination, there’s plenty to keep the kids interested. Pack a picnic and take your time enjoying this beautiful corner of Nelson Lakes. Don't forget your insect repellent for the sandflies on this out and back trip.

8. Mt Malita, Mount Richmond Forest Park

  • Distance: 11 km
  • Elevation gain: 800 m

A summit adventure for kids who don’t mind a good climb! The track follows a 4WD road through pine forest before a steeper final section to the top. On a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with views across Tasman Bay and the surrounding ranges. There is a little hut to stop at if you need to up there too.

9. Maitai Caves, Nelson

  • Distance: 10.5 km
  • Elevation gain: 240 m

For kids who love the idea of an adventure, a walk towards the Maitai Caves makes an exciting day out close to Nelson. Enjoy the forest and valley scenery along the way. Start at the Maitai Dam and follow the trail with good signposts to the caves. Bring a torch!

10. Lake Chalice, Mount Richmond Forest Park

  • Distance: 5.5 km
  • Elevation gain: 450 m

Tucked amongst native beech forest, Lake Chalice is a beautiful spot for a family picnic. The track descends towards the lake, so remember to save some energy for the climb back to the car park! It’s a lovely place to pause, take in the views and enjoy some time together outdoors. Or stay in the hut here by the lake :)

A Few Things to Consider

Every child hikes differently, so choose an adventure that suits your whānau’s experience, fitness and confidence. A few things to think about before you go:

  • Start with a suitable distance. There’s no rush to finish the whole track—turning around early is always an option.
  • Allow plenty of time. Little legs, interesting rocks and snack breaks can all add to your day!
  • Check the weather, track and road conditions. Conditions can change quickly, especially in the mountains.
  • Pack for the day. Take warm layers, a rain jacket, sun protection, plenty of water, extra food, a first aid kit and an appropriate way to call for help.
  • Keep an eye on water and crossings. Streams can rise after rain, and lakes and waterfalls need close supervision.
  • Tell someone your plans. Let a trusted person know where you’re going and when you expect to be back.

Taking the kids hiking doesn’t have to be about reaching the destination. Sometimes the best part of the day is spotting birds, finding the perfect picnic spot or simply spending time together outdoors.
