Hike or Bike the Old Ghost Road, Kahurangi National Park

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

Quiet trails, crisp mornings: the Old Ghost Road takes on a completely different personality in winter. Expect dramatic cloud inversions, frosty tussock, crystal clear views (if you time it right) and absolutely stunning sunrises and sunsets.

Distance: 85km one way
Timings: t
ramping ~ 4 to 5 days, biking ~ 2 to 3 days

The breakdown:

  1. Lyell to Lyell Saddle Hut ~ 18km
  2. Lyell Saddle Hut to Ghost Lake Hut ~ 12km
  3. Ghost Lake Hut to Stern Valley ~ 13km
  4. Stern Valley Hut to Specimen Point ~ 25km
  5. Specimen Point Hut to Seddonville ~ 17km

We love experiencing this trail in the cooler seasons – wearing lots of toasty layers, sipping hot chocolates, playing boardgames and cosying up by the woodburner after a day in the hills. Plus the off-peak special is only $100 for adults and $50 for kids - bargain!

Stretching 85km through remote high country between Lyell and Seddonville on the west coast, the OGR follows historic gold-mining routes through lush native forest, across craggy ridgelines and down roaring river gorges. The track is well-maintained and non-technical, so you’re able to take in the stunning landscape without constantly watching your feet. Not to mention the huts are fully equipped with gas burners, firewood and cooking utensils (including coffee plungers and kettles!), so you can travel light – or just bring extra snacks!

Logistics: the cheapest options are to organise a key swap with a friend, or book a car relocation through Buller Adventures ($250 Lyell to Seddonville, $100 for the reverse). Shuttle services are also available if you want to relax to the max and don’t mind the extra cost.

Note: winter conditions can change quickly in the mountains. Ensure you pack warm layers, waterproofs and safety gear, fully charge headtorches, and stock up on extra food.
