Perched high on a ridgeline in Kahurangi National Park, Ghost Lake Hut is one of the most iconic overnight stops on the Old Ghost Road. With its breathtaking alpine views and cosy interior, it’s the ultimate slice of South Island hospitality.
On foot it’s usually a two-day journey to reach the hut, but if you’re a keen fast-packer it should pose no challenge to smash the distance in a day. Similarly, bikepacking the route will be quick and relatively crusiey! The return journey? You’ll be flying downhill!
Trailhead to Lyell Saddle Hut: 17km, +600m
Lyell Saddle Hut to Ghost Lake Hut: 10.6km, +570m
The trailhead at Lyell - a two and a half drive from Nelson - has toilets and plenty of parking. The 17km to Lyell Saddle Hut is a lovely stroll with a gentle gradient (see our blog post for specifics). Rest overnight at the hut, or stop for lunch and a hot beverage then continue on!
The next part of the trail is out of this world, and you’ll certainly be praying for a clear day! Heading up out of the forest, you’ll leave the bushline behind as the terrain morphs into rolling tussock plains. You’ll walk past craggy rock formations, sheer cliffs and stunning view points as you watch your trail wrap around the mountainside and off into the distance. Make sure to stop at “Heaven’s Door” for the OGR’s most famous view!
Take your time to soak in the views, as the 10.6km to the hut will absolutely fly by. Once you reach Ghost Lake, put the kettle on and your feet up, and soak in the sweeping views!
We really rate the Old Ghost Road as a winter hike, as the huts are fully stocked with cooking equipment and firewood, and are much quieter (and cheaper!) in the off season.
