Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)
Need to stretch the legs on your next east coast road trip? This wee loop along Kaikōura’s esplanade and South Bay showcases stunning wild ocean, local wildlife and an epic (snowy!) mountain range.
Distance: 9km loop
Elevation: 344m gain
The track is easy and well-maintained, and would also suit a cruisey trail run or an adventure with the little tackers. You’ll be exposed up on the cliffs, so bring a hat, warm layers and plenty of water.
Park up for free at the South Bay recreation reserve, a great spot for a pre- or post-hike picnic! There are stellar views the entire walk along the coastal high track, but Whalers Bay Lookout is well worth the wee side trip. Visit the local seal colony right on the edge of the peninsula at Point Kean, but make sure to keep at least 10m away.
Feeling peskish? The Kaikōura Seafood Kiosk is mint for a snack along the way. You could also stop by the gorgeous Pier Hotel for an afternoon beverage, and relax in front of the fire or looking out over the ocean. After the Pier Hotel continue your stroll through town to Tom’s Track Walkway, cutting across the peninsula back to South Bay.
