Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)
Cupola Hut (8 bunk) is located up the stunning Travers River Valley in Nelson Lakes National Park. At 1390m, it’s one of the highest huts around and the perfect place to tackle climbing Mt Cupola or just soak in the incredible alpine scenery. It was renovated by the Backcountry Trust in 2021, with a new roof, wall linings, water tank, wood burner and paint job. Great work legends!
Including Lake Rotoiti, 3-4 days
Distance: 27km one-way
Elevation: +940m -162m
Stay the night at Lakehead Hut after a short 9km walk, then it's a further 18km the next day to Cupola Hut. The track along the valley floor is quite flat, with the river rushing by and the St Arnaud & Travers Ranges towering overhead. After John Tait Hut, the elevation kicks up a notch and you’ll climb 600m over 4km. But it is well worth the climb!
Excluding Lake Rotoiti, 2 days
Distance: 18.5km
Elevation: +860m -111m
We ❤️❤️❤️ Nelson Lakes, but the approaches can be quite long, and the same routes a bit tedious! If you’re short on time (or you’ve walked around the lake a squillion times), book yourself a transfer with Rotoiti Water Taxis. $160 for 4 people - just $40 each!
🔥 Hot Tip 🔥 Did you know you can book the hot tub at the St Arnaud Lodge for $25 an hour!?! Pizza & a soak? Now that’s the best way to finish a tramp!
