Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)
Nestled deep in the west coast wilderness, Greys Hut sits on the bank of the Karamea River in a clearing that is constantly battling the encroaching forest. Like something out of the Jurassic age, this track winds its way along the ancient Karamea Gorge and under towering ferns and nikau palms. If moody, misty mountains, lush jungle and a hut you really have to earn is your jam – this is the trip for you!
Distance: 6.6km
Elevation: +314m
Parking is easy to find at the end of Umere Road, east of Karamea. The track start, however, is not! In typical West Coast fashion, the forest hides any hint of human habitation. On your right after crossing Virgin Creek, look for a tiny white sign with “TRACK” in red. Don’t follow the road!
The distance may be short and elevation low, but don’t underestimate this track. The going is slow due to river bed rock hopping, climbing under and over fallen trees, and scrambling along steep banks. Take your time with navigation and stay focused – it’s easy to lose the track in here. If you realise you’re off trail, don’t be tempted to bush-bash your way through the trees (it’s bloody hard work!). Head back the way you came until you rejoin the marked route.
And it goes without saying: the west coast sandflies will be out and biting. Go in the cooler months, cover up and wear plenty of bug repellant (we dig Okarito!).
