Hike to Hidden Hut, Leatham Conservation Area

Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)

Tucked away up the Leatham Valley, Hidden Hut is your classic backcountry shelter. Small, tidy, quaint & cosy – exactly what’s called for after a long day in the bush. If you’re looking for a remote, rugged, off the beaten path adventure to avoid the summer crowds, add this one to your list!

The Wye Route

Distance: ~13km +1100m -880m (6-8 hours)

Just under 2.5 hours drive from Nelson, the track starts at the Leatham Valley Road end – 4WD is highly recommended! Depending on the ford you may have to park up and strike out on foot, otherwise park up on the grass near the trailhead. If you’re not precious about your vehicle you could drive up the steep 4WD track and park at the quarry.

The track is heckin steep right off the bat, and overgrown at times. But the great thing about big climbs? The views! You’ll look out towards the Leatham Valley and Red Hills as you undulate along and up the ridge. The track is easy to follow as it handrails a fence line with the occasional orange marker or pole. You’ll cross Station Creek several times before hitting a short scree section on your way up to the saddle.

The descent off the saddle is a wee bit of a mish, sidling through overgrown bush – keep your eyes peeled for the markers and watch out for speargrass! After picking your way down the spur, the track crosses the Wye River a handful of times before reaching the quaint Hidden Hut tucked away in a large clearing.

If you’ve got a few days up your sleeve, optional side quests include Turkey’s Nest Biv, summiting Bounds (2044m), or heading out via Boulder Forks Hut & Boulder Stream (the historic hut has Ed Hillary’s name on the wall!).

Note: dog friendly with a permit - usually for hunting purposes.
