Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)
With spectacular views out to the Raglan Range, Lees Creek Hut is a must on your tramping bucket list! This wee 4 bunker was lovingly restored by the Backcountry Trust in 2021, and boasts a sweet red roof and cosy woodburner. It used to be located 10km to the north, near Sandfly Stream - thank goodness it has been moved!
Distance: 10.1km one way
Elevation: +394m
This hut is accessible from the Rainbow Road near St Arnaud, just before the Homestead toll gate. Park below the power lines opposite the track start, cross the Wairau River using the swing bridge and follow the track up Lee’s Creek.
The trail traverses native bush, open grassy meadows and crosses several small streams. There is a very gentle gradient, and the entire 10km only climbs by 394m! This would be a wonderful weekend mission with the kiddos, allowing them to explore more of our stunning backcountry. The track is pretty well-marked, but there is one section that cuts down close to the river – we wouldn’t recommend attempting this one after heavy rainfall!
As you approach the hut, the terrain opens up into a grassy meadow with an impressive outlook of the Raglan Range and it's towering 2000+ meter peaks. If the hut is at capacity, there are plenty of spots to pitch a tent.
