Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)
If you’d like to dip your toe into overnight tramping, we highly recommend an overnighter to Lyell Saddle Hut! Fully equipped with gas cooking facilities & all the utensils you could dream of, your pack will be light as a feather (or not if you add extra chocolate, wine, cheese…)
Distance: 17km one-way (4-6 hours)
Elevation: +600m
Just a two hour drive from Nelson, the trailhead starts at the Lyell DOC campsite just off the State Highway. Here you’ll find a plethora of parking spaces, a toilet block and the iconic Old Ghost Road sign - make sure to get a photo!
The track is super easy to navigate and is well-maintained with a gradual incline. However it is on the shady side so wear your layers! Meander through native bush, across bridges and past mini waterfalls. Time will fly as you chat away and soak in the peaceful forest.
As the name suggests, the Lyell Saddle Hut is perched on a saddle with an incredible outlook over the forest. Make yourself a cuppa, sit out on the deck and bask in the afternoon sun!
Alternatively, you could also bike or run this trail! Bookings are required for overnight stays ($40 adult, $20 child) but the trail is free for day users, with the option to contribute koha towards upkeep.
Note: lots of resources indicate this day has mega elevation, yet in actual fact is only about 600m of gain. Don’t be put off! It really is a lovely, cruisey walk!
