Each week, we highlight our fave tramping trails in New Zealand for day and multi day hikes across Nelson Tasman (and beyond!)
Location of the Week 📍
Mount Fell Hut, Mount Richmond Forest Park
In Nelson we are spoiled for choice when it comes to overnight hikes. The trip up to the summit of Mount Fell is the perfect weekend getaway, and should be on the tramping bucket list of every local! And even better, this hike is dog friendly.
To the hut: 10.5km +1219m -142m ~5 hours
To the summit: 2.2km +341m ~1 hour
Though just “over the hill” in Mount Richmond Forest Park, the trailhead is a decent 2 hour drive over the Whangamoas to the North Bank of the Wairoa River. Park up at Timms Creek carpark at the end of Te Rou Road.
The stroll along Timms Creek is beautiful, and there is a grassy clearing not too far along the track that’s perfect for picnicking and swimming.Â
A couple of hours in, the track leaves the river and the grunty 900m climb begins! Take your time and enjoy the gorgeous beech forest. Mt Fell Hut (6 bunk) is located at 1280m and is perfectly situated to catch an epic sunrise! The summit is another hour from the hut - expect rock scrambling and incredible views of Mt Richmond, Mt Fishtail and all the way down to Tasman Bay!Â
The most straightforward route option is the out-and-back, but if you’d like to create a loop head down the Richmond Saddle Hut route instead. Keep in mind that there will be some road walking required to get back to your car. Or if you’ve managed to link up the ridge to Mt Fishtail - let us know!
