Getting bored of your well-trodden running loop? Why not spice things up and head a bit further afield to check out this loop from Canaan Downs. The area is iconic for its ancient beech forests, rolling meadows and eerie limestone formations. And calling all LOTR nerds! This area was used as a filming location for The Fellowship of the Ring and The Hobbit.
Distance: 10.75km loop
Elevation: +271m -269m
Perfect for a family day hike or trail run, this route is easy underfoot and has some lovely views! Take a picnic and have lunch at Wainui Hut.
There’s also the option of adding on some extra k’s, with the Gold Creek loop or an exploratory stroll to Harwoods Hole.
And if your spouse/mate is more of an mtb shredder than a mountain goat, they can whip down the Rameka or around the Canaan Big Loop while you’re out on a trot.
