Airport Perimeter Walkway, NelsonÂ
Looking for an easy local stroll that’s accessible for the whole family? This underrated track loops around the outside of Nelson Airport, with lovely views of Monaco Peninsula, Tasman Bay and the not-so-distant Richmond Ranges. The avid plane-spotters among us will absolutely be in their element, and the flat terrain is perfect for a cruisey 5km run.
Distance: 5km loop
Elevation: nil!
The track – recently refurbished in December 2025 – loops around the outskirts of the Nelson Golf Course and follows the airport perimeter fence. There is a small carpark on Trent Drive just before the airport boom gates, and street parking on McLaren Drive – both free for 3 hours.
Along the route there are 6 dedicated plane viewing spots for the perfect photo opportunity, and picnic benches dotted along the water’s edge. It is not a sealed track the whole way so can be uneven in places, but is still buggy-friendly.Â
No bikes, dogs or drones allowed on this one folks!
